Employing camera traps in strategic locations like the Kishtwar High Altitude National Park and South-Eastern Padder, the census confirms the existence of breeding snow leopards. This reinforces the ecological role of these magnificent cats in sustaining the region’s delicate ecosystem balance.
Technological Advancements Bolstering Conservation
Camera trap technology emerges as a pivotal aid for conservationists and researchers, enabling wildlife study without disrupting natural behavior. A comprehensive survey spanning 278 camera traps across 135 spots captured substantial evidence of snow leopards and their prey. These findings underline the area’s significance as a crucial conservation sanctuary for these elusive felines.
Thriving Yet Endangered
Approximately 20 individual snow leopards, including a mother with two cubs, were documented during the survey, confirming breeding within the Kishtwar snow leopard populace. With an evolving estimate nearing 100 snow leopards in the district, preserving their habitat and instituting robust conservation measures becomes paramount. The sighting reinforces both the success of conservation endeavors and the pressing need for continued investment in these initiatives to safeguard these majestic creatures’ future.
