Rahul Gandhi Vows Caste Census as First Action of Future Congress Government

While addressing a rally in Chhattisgarh’s Bemetara district, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi made a significant promise. He pledged that if the Congress forms a government in Delhi, their first action will be to implement a caste census. Gandhi described this move as potentially “the most revolutionary decision after independence,” highlighting its importance in identifying and addressing the needs of various social groups, particularly the Other Backward Classes (OBCs).

    Empowering OBCs and the Underprivileged

Gandhi criticized the current administration for its approach to OBC representation and rights. He emphasized the Congress’s commitment to accurately determining the OBC population to ensure proportional participation and representation. Furthermore, he promised that under a Congress government, financial relief would prioritize farmers over billionaires. This statement reflects the party’s focus on empowering the underprivileged sectors of society.

Promises for Education and Women’s Financial Support

Among other pledges, Gandhi announced the Chhattisgarh government’s decision to provide free education from kindergarten to postgraduate levels. He also promised an annual financial support of Rs 15,000 to every woman in the state. These initiatives are part of the Congress’s broader agenda to uplift education and support women’s financial independence.

    Congress’s Position in Upcoming Elections

The context of Gandhi’s promises comes ahead of the second phase of the Chhattisgarh assembly elections, with the first phase having concluded on November 7. The Congress party, currently in power in both Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan, is preparing for upcoming polls in Rajasthan on November 25. The party’s strong performance in the last elections in both states, where they formed governments, sets the stage for its strategies and promises in the current election cycle.
