Key Highlights:
- Punjab’s assembly speaker suspends 27 lawmakers following the Supreme Court’s verdict.
- Majority of suspended members belong to ruling party PML-N, reducing its presence in the house.
- Supreme Court to hear the case concerning reserved seats daily starting from June 3.
The ruling alliance in Punjab, Pakistan, encountered a significant blow as 27 of its lawmakers on reserved seats were suspended by the provincial assembly’s speaker, in compliance with the recent Supreme Court ruling, as per The News International. Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan suspended memberships of lawmakers allocated seats for women and minorities, with 23 belonging to the PML-N, shrinking the party’s presence in the assembly to 203.
The suspended members include representatives from PPP, IPP, and PML-Q, alongside three minorities MPs. The Supreme Court’s decision to hear the case daily from June 3 underscores the gravity of the situation, particularly concerning the allocation of reserved seats. The legal battle, spurred by the Election Commission’s rejection of reserved seats for the SIC, continues to unfold, affecting the political landscape of Punjab.
