Punjab CM Lays Foundation for Steel’s ₹2,600 Crore Steel Plant, Promises 2,500 Jobs
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has initiated the construction of a Tata Group-owned steel plant in Ludhiana. This steel plant, with a projected cost of ₹2,600 crore, is expected to create 2,500 job opportunities in the state.
Focus on Steel Recycling Route
The forthcoming steel plant will emphasize steel production through the steel recycling route. Tata Steel entered into an MoU with the Punjab Government for the establishment of a 0.75 MnTPA long products steel plant on August 26, 2022. The plant will incorporate a scrap-based electric arc furnace.
Boosting Industrial Growth and Employment
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann commended Tata Group’s new project in the state and highlighted that this recent investment would stimulate industrial growth in Punjab and open up new employment avenues. Chanakya Chaudhary from Tata Steel praised the government for the rapid commencement of plant construction within 14 months of signing the MoU.
Recycling for Sustainability
The steel plant will be the first of Tata Group in Punjab and will produce construction-grade steel rebar under the company’s flagship retail brand ‘Tata Tiscon.’ This sustainable approach entails reduced resource consumption and lower carbon emissions. Punjab’s proximity to the market and its scrap-generating Auto Hub makes it an ideal location for Tata Steel’s electric arc furnace.
Tata Steel’s Commitment to Sustainability
T. V. Narendran, Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director of Tata Steel, affirmed the company’s dedication to sustainable practices in steel production. Tata Steel previously commissioned its first Steel Recycling Plant with a capacity of 0.5 MnTPA in Rohtak, Haryana, in August 2022. This facility is the country’s first state-of-the-art scrap processing unit.
