PTI Websites Blocked Ahead of General Elections, Party Seeks Clarification
In preparation for the upcoming general elections on February 8, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has reported the blocking of its websites in Pakistan. Deprived of its ‘bat’ symbol for the elections, PTI has nominated its leaders as independent candidates with different symbols. The party launched an online portal on its website and a backup site to provide information to voters. PTI questioned the reason behind the website block and tagged Pakistan’s Telecommunication Authority (PTA), Interim Information Minister Murtaza Solangi, and interim IT minister Umar Saif in its social media post seeking clarification.
Concerns Over Internet Disruptions and Previous Incidents
Multiple internet outages coinciding with PTI’s online events have been reported in Pakistan. The party faced interruptions on January 20, an hour before its “virtual power show.” Earlier incidents occurred on December 17 and January 7, prompting PTI to seek the Supreme Court’s notice. The caretaker government attributed these disruptions to “technical” issues and system installations. Information Minister Solangi acknowledged the uncertainty of future incidents, citing possible technical glitches and system upgrades over the next two to three months.
Government Measures and PTI’s Response
The caretaker government had imposed Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) to restrict PTI’s upcoming power show, according to Imran Khan. PTI’s social media team member Jibran Ilyas sought an explanation from the interim IT minister regarding the blockage of PTI’s websites, emphasizing the party’s popularity and questioning the reason behind the government’s action. The election-related developments raise concerns about transparency and access to information during the electoral process.
