PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi Rearrested Amid Allegations and Legal Backlash
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Vice Chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi faces a tumultuous legal battle after being rearrested by Pakistani police in connection with 12 separate cases linked to May 9 violence. Dawn reported that Qureshi was implicated in these cases by the district police and was subsequently sent to Adiala Jail for a two-week remand regarding an attack on the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi.
Despite the Punjab police’s plea for a 30-day remand, the court granted a two-week detention and rejected the extended request. Qureshi alleged he faced mental and physical torture during his earlier imprisonment, relating to the GHQ attack case.
During the court appearance, Qureshi was handcuffed but later ordered by the magistrate to have them removed. High-security measures barred media access to the courtroom where he was presented. Following the court’s decision for judicial remand, Qureshi was escorted to jail by the police.
Qureshi asserted his desire to provide a statement, mentioning his prior bail in a separate cypher case approved by the Supreme Court. He claimed arbitrary detention under the Maintenance of Public Order after the bail’s approval and highlighted his subsequent rearrest from prison in a new case.
Reportedly mistreated, Qureshi alleged physical abuse by police officials and medical negligence despite experiencing chest pains. PTI released footage depicting Qureshi being mishandled during his arrest outside Adiala Jail, prompting condemnation and demands for Supreme Court intervention by the party.
PTI denounced the arrest as “illegal” since it contradicted the Supreme Court’s bail decision and the withdrawal of detention orders under the 3-MPO. Geo News and Dawn covered PTI’s condemnation and its call for suo motu action from the Supreme Court.
The ongoing legal saga surrounding Qureshi’s rearrest is fueling a heated debate on the validity of the actions taken against the PTI Vice Chairman despite prior court rulings.
