The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has formally requested Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa to recuse himself from cases involving the party and its founder, Imran Khan, as reported by ARY News on Friday. The PTI core committee released a statement emphasizing the need for the Chief Justice to step aside, citing concerns over potential bias and the fairness of legal proceedings.

The PTI’s objection comes as the Supreme Court prepares to convene on June 3 to address the reserved seats case of the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), with Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa presiding. Justice Musarrat Hilali will be absent from these proceedings due to health reasons.

Previously, a three-member bench, chaired by Justice Mansoor Ali Shah and including Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar and Justice Athar Minallah, suspended a verdict concerning the allocation of reserved seats to other political parties. Justice Mansoor Ali Shah announced the suspension of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and Peshawar High Court (PHC) verdicts, scheduling the case for a hearing.

Imran Khan recently appeared before a Supreme Court bench led by CJP Isa concerning amendments to the National Accountability Ordinance 1999, just a day before PTI’s call for recusal.

Additionally, a local court recently acquitted former Prime Minister Imran Khan in two cases linked to violent protests following his arrest on May 9, 2022. Khan was also acquitted in cases related to the Azadi March held on May 25, 2022. Despite these acquittals, Khan faces multiple cases, including those related to the May 9 violence across Pakistan, and is currently incarcerated in Adiala jail. Six FIRs related to the May 9 riots have been registered against him in various Islamabad police stations, accusing him of inciting violence and blocking highways.
