Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has declared plans for peaceful protests nationwide on May 9, commemorating the anniversary of the 2023 protests ignited by the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan. PTI chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan reiterated the demand for a judicial inquiry into the events surrounding May 9, emphasizing the need for accountability.
Gohar Ali Khan announced that PTI will lead peaceful rallies across the country on May 9, with ticket holders taking the forefront. The May 9 events stemmed from violent protests following Imran Khan’s arrest in a corruption case, resulting in damage to public and private property, as well as attacks on military installations.
During discussions with Imran Khan in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail, Gohar Ali Khan highlighted legal matters, including the Supreme Court’s suspension of the Peshawar High Court’s ruling on reserved seats. The PTI chairman expressed hope for the return of 78 seats and addressed talks with US Ambassador Donald Blome regarding alleged human rights violations in Pakistan.
Meanwhile, ISPR Director General Major General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry stressed the importance of holding perpetrators accountable to uphold the credibility of Pakistan’s justice system, emphasizing that the May 9 riots concern the entire nation, not just the Pakistan Army.
