PTI Forms Alliance with SIC to Secure Parliamentary Seats and Strengthen Party Unity
After days of speculation regarding the fate of PTI-backed independent members-elect, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has officially joined forces with the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) to secure reserved seats for women and minorities in the national, Punjab, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa assemblies. The alliance also includes the Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM), marking a significant political development in Pakistani politics.
Formalizing the Alliance Through Joint Press Conference
In a joint press conference held in Islamabad, PTI leader Gohar Ali Khan, accompanied by the party’s nominee for the prime minister’s slot Omar Ayub Khan, MWM Secretary General Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, and SIC chief Sahibzada Hamid Raza, officially announced the alliance. Gohar Ali Khan emphasized that the agreement with the SIC had been reached with consensus and received approval from PTI founder Imran Khan. The leaders highlighted the submission of applications to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to formalize their candidates’ affiliation with the SIC.
Challenges Faced by PTI Since the Elections
Since the February 8 elections, PTI has faced challenges in securing reserved seats as its candidates contested as independents after losing the electoral symbol ‘bat’ due to a Supreme Court verdict. Gohar Ali Khan demanded the ECP to allocate reserved seats in line with the party’s mandate, reiterating PTI’s commitment to reclaim its electoral rights.
Allegations of Rigging and Legal Action Initiated
During the press conference, former Federal Minister for Economic Affairs, Omar Ayub, alleged widespread rigging to diminish PTI’s majority, especially in Karachi, Hyderabad, Peshawar, and Punjab. PTI initiated legal action in the Peshawar High Court to assert its entitlement to reserved seats, filing a writ petition contesting the Election Rules 2017. The petition highlighted PTI’s compliance with electoral regulations and its commitment to democratic principles.
The alliance between PTI and SIC not only addresses the immediate concern of securing reserved seats but also emphasizes a shared vision to combat sectarian violence, promote democracy, and contribute to national progress and unity.
