PTI Files Petitions in Islamabad High Court Seeking Level Playing Field Ahead of General Elections
Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) has lodged four petitions with the Islamabad High Court (IHC), urging for fair opportunities, approval to conduct public gatherings and rallies, and the facilitation of meetings between party leaders and imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan before the scheduled February 8 general elections, as reported by Dawn.
According to the petition, PTI was refused permission to organize workers’ conventions, public meetings, or protests in Islamabad. The party claims that this denial prevents them from exercising their political rights, which are constitutionally guaranteed.
These four petitions, filed on Wednesday by PTI, highlight the denial of a level playing field in various regions of the country, hindering the fulfillment of essential political activities as guaranteed under different constitutional articles, as per Dawn.
In a separate legal move, Imran Khan himself appealed to the court to enable meetings with several party members imprisoned with him, seeking discussions with Asad Qaiser, Junaid Akbar Khan, Aurangzeb Khan, Dost Mohammad Khan, and Ishtiaq Meherban.
The petition specifically requests the court to instruct the superintendent of Adiala Jail to ensure privacy during these discussions.
Meanwhile, the Special Court (Official Secrets Act) granted permission to Imran Khan to open two bank accounts via biometric verification, allowing bank representatives to communicate with him. Khan’s lawyer informed the court of the necessity to activate dormant accounts and create new ones for electoral purposes in Mianwali and Lahore.
Earlier objections were raised against Imran Khan’s nomination papers by Mian Naseer of PML-N, stating that his seconder and proposer were not from NA-122, a legal requirement. Similar objections were also filed against PPP’s Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and PML-N’s Maryam Nawaz.
The legal proceedings and petitions signify the complexities and challenges faced by political parties ahead of the upcoming general elections in Pakistan.
