Protests Turn Violent in Haryana Hisar: Officer Injured

In Khedi Chwpata, Haryana, a police officer was injured in a fierce clash between protesting farmers and law enforcement. Chaotic scenes unfolded as riot personnel, clad in full gear, attempted to take individuals into custody while being surrounded by agitated farmers.

Farmers’ March Thwarted: Unrest Erupts in Khanauri

The situation escalated when farmers, aiming to join others at the Punjab border, were stopped from marching to Khanauri. The confrontation involved tear gas shells, a police lathi charge, and stone-throwing by protesters. The farmers were part of the larger ‘Delhi Chalo’ movement, demanding legal guarantees for MSP, waiver of farm loans, pensions, and a rollback of increased electricity rates.

Tragic Losses Amidst Protests: Deaths Shake Khanauri

Earlier that day, a 62-year-old farmer, Darshan Singh from Bathinda district, suffered a cardiac arrest and passed away in Khanauri. His demise marked the second fatality from Bathinda in these protests, following the death of Subhkaran Singh, 21, during a clash with the police. Farmer leaders insist on a case registration before Darshan Singh’s cremation.

Persistent Farmer Protests: Government’s Offer Rejected

Despite setbacks, farmer leaders remain resolute in their demands. Recent talks with the government yielded no resolution, as farmers seek MSP coverage for all 23 cash crops and legal guarantees. The government’s offer of a five-year contract to buy specific crops at the old MSP was rejected. The ongoing protests pose a challenge for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, especially with a general election looming. Agriculture Minister Arjun Munda urged patience, cautioning against external forces attempting to “hijack” the protests. Amidst the turmoil, a tractor rally and a day-long program at Delhi’s Ram Leela Ground are planned by farmers’ unions, showcasing their unwavering commitment.
