Prime Minister Modi to Attend World Climate Action Summit in Dubai
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set for a significant two-day visit to Dubai, scheduled for November 30 to December 1. The visit is primarily to participate in the World Climate Action Summit, a crucial segment of the 28th meeting of the United Nations Conference of the Parties (COP28) on climate. This global summit, held under the presidency of the UAE, will bring together several world leaders to discuss critical strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and addressing climate change challenges.
India’s Ambitious Climate Agenda at the Forefront
At the World Climate Action Summit, PM Modi is expected to underscore India’s ambitious climate goals and initiatives. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) highlighted that this visit follows the invitation of Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE and the ruler of Abu Dhabi. The COP28, taking place from November 28 to December 12, is a platform for India to further its significant contributions to climate action, including the ‘Panchamrit’ targets and the Mission Lifestyle for Environment (LiFE), announced during COP-26 in Glasgow.
Focus on Climate Finance and Bilateral Meetings
The summit will also focus on crucial aspects like climate finance, especially the need for supporting developing countries in combating climate change. As part of its G20 presidency, India has been vocal about facilitating climate finance. The MEA stated that PM Modi’s participation in COP28 is an opportunity to build on the achievements made during India’s G20 presidency. During his visit, PM Modi is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with other world leaders attending the summit, fostering international cooperation in tackling climate-related issues.
