In the wake of a potent 7.5-magnitude earthquake and subsequent aftershocks in Japan’s Ishikawa prefecture, over 32,500 homes grapple with power outages, as reported by CNN, citing Hokuriku Electric Power. Coastal areas in western Japan are under tsunami warnings, prompting urgent evacuation measures.

The earthquake, striking with intense force, inflicted damage to buildings in Suzu city, Ishikawa, leading to reported injuries and trapped individuals, as stated by Suzu city officials speaking to CNN via NHK. Rescue efforts are underway by the police and fire department to assess and address the situation.

Wajima city, also in Ishikawa prefecture, bore tsunami waves reaching approximately 1.2 meters around 4:21 pm (local time), reported CNN, referencing Japanese public broadcaster NHK. However, no immediate damage reports surfaced. Several areas along Japan’s western coast, including Toyama city, Kashiwazaki, Kanazawa port, Tobishima island, and Sado island, experienced waves below 1 meter.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has placed Noto city in Ishikawa under a major tsunami warning, anticipating waves up to 5 meters. Japan’s tsunami alert system categorizes warnings based on wave height, with advisories for waves below 1 meter, warnings for waves surpassing 3 meters, and major warnings for waves exceeding 5 meters.

After the earthquake’s impact, the Shinkansen bullet train services, including JR Hokuriku and Joetsu lines, were suspended, causing disruptions and delays across other routes, stated CNN, citing train operator JR East.

The Japan PM Office issued directives, emphasizing prompt and accurate public information dissemination, evacuation measures, and damage assessment. They urged coordinated efforts with local governments, prioritizing human life and ensuring comprehensive disaster response initiatives.

The Japan Meteorological Agency cautioned about potential aftershocks over the next days to a week, warning of building collapses and landslides in heavily shaken areas. A wide area experienced aftershocks, noted CNN, citing the agency and the USGS recording at least 14 smaller aftershocks near the epicenter.
