Power Outages in Kashmir Jeopardize Oxygen-dependent Patients, Sparking Urgent Calls for Reliable Solutions
Power outages in Kashmir, occurring without warning, pose a grave threat to the well-being of individuals dependent on oxygen support within the comfort of their homes.
In the heart of Srinagar City, an unreliable power grid has plunged patients into precarious situations, while those residing in rural areas encounter even more formidable challenges.
Concerned individuals from various parts of Srinagar shared their grievances with expressing distress over the frequent and unscheduled disruptions in power that have transformed their lifeline—oxygen supply—into a source of anxiety and suffering.Shakeel Ahmad, the son of a patient in the Barzulla area of Srinagar, emphasized the critical need for a continuous power supply for oxygen concentrators, which play a vital role in supporting those with respiratory conditions.

Despite the urban setting, Ahmad revealed the obstacles he faces in maintaining a consistent oxygen supply for his father. He stated, “I have to journey to Batamaloo every other day to refill an oxygen cylinder, incurring a cost of around Rs 500, including travel expenses.”Another patient from Wantpora, Srinagar, echoed similar concerns, underscoring the urgent requirement for a 24×7 oxygen supply, an aspiration hindered by the unpredictable power outages.
Stressing the gravity of the situation, the patient noted that any disruption exceeding half an hour could lead to a decline in their health.Patients and their families in other Srinagar areas conveyed the challenges they grapple with in managing power backup solutions and ensuring the safety of their loved ones.
While some have turned to alternative power sources, they pointed out the inherent difficulties, emphasizing that not everyone can afford generators or backups.
Highlighting the financial constraints faced by many, they disclosed that patients from economically disadvantaged backgrounds rely on concentrators provided by NGOs. However, the daily task of refilling oxygen cylinders remains a formidable challenge.
The dire circumstances faced by patients in Srinagar City raise concerns about the situation in rural areas, where individuals have to travel to Srinagar or visit hospitals daily for cylinder refills.
In their plea to the government, patients and their families urged swift action to address the matter, emphasizing the need for, at the very least, a scheduled power supply.
