PM Kakar Leads Efforts for Smooth and Peaceful Electoral Conduct
Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar assured the Commonwealth Observer Group (COG) of Pakistan’s commitment to facilitating peaceful and efficient general elections 2024 during a meeting with COG’s delegation, led by former Nigerian President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.
The gathering, a part of COG’s pre-election engagements with stakeholders, underscored Pakistan’s dedication as a Commonwealth member state to hosting independent international observers for the electoral process.
Prime Minister Kakar emphasized the caretaker government’s efforts in ensuring the country’s smooth governance and conducive environment in the run-up to the elections.
He expressed confidence in the Pakistani populace to exercise their democratic right to vote freely and fairly. In response, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan conveyed the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, Patricia Scotland’s well wishes and affirmed COG’s commitment to visiting polling stations across Pakistan to oversee the electoral proceedings.
As the nation gears up for the general elections slated for February 8, 2024, over 128 million voters, both male and female, are poised to participate.
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) disclosed that a total of 5,121 candidates are vying for seats in the National Assembly, with 4,807 males and 312 females in the fray. Additionally, two transgender individuals have thrown their hats into the electoral ring.
For the provincial assemblies of Sindh, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), and Balochistan, a staggering 12,695 candidates are contesting, comprising 12,123 males and 570 females. The total registered voter count stands at 128,585,760 nationwide,
