Dr. Abed Elrazeg Abu Jazer, the Charge d’Affaires a.i. and Media Advisor of the Embassy of Palestine in New Delhi, announced that a high-ranking Palestinian delegation will participate in the 46th Intergovernmental Committee for the Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage. The event, organized by UNESCO, will take place from July 21-31 at the Bharat Mandapam International Exhibition and Convention Center (IECC) in New Delhi.
The Palestinian delegation plans to advocate for the inclusion of the Tell Umm Amer site, the monastery of St. Hilarion in the Gaza Strip, on the list of World Heritage in Danger. Jazer emphasized the importance of India’s support for this initiative, highlighting India’s role in enhancing Palestinian efforts to protect significant heritage and historical sites.
The statement noted that the state of Palestine aims to safeguard heritage sites in Palestine, which are being systematically targeted and destroyed by Israeli occupation forces. The ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip has severely impacted cultural buildings and archaeological sites, necessitating urgent and long-term measures for preservation.
Palestine has also requested India to condemn the deliberate targeting of the Tell Umm Amer site and its access road. Emphasizing the need to preserve the site’s Outstanding Universal Value against ongoing threats, whether natural or human, the statement underscores the importance of maintaining the cultural and historical diversity of the world.
The Palestinian delegation will include several notable figures: Ambassador of Palestine to UNESCO, H.E. Monir Anastas; Ambassador of Palestine to India, H.E. Adnan Abu Al-Hayjaa; Dr. Abed Elrazeg Abu Jazer, political and media counselor; Ahmed Rajoub, Director General of Heritage at the Palestinian Ministry of Tourism in Ramallah; and Hanan Najjajrah from the Ministry of Tourism in Ramallah.
