Pakistan’s Ex-PM Imran Khan and Party Excluded from Election Campaign Ahead of Polls
In the lead-up to the February 8 elections in Pakistan, a relentless crackdown, attributed to the powerful military, has significantly hampered the campaign of former cricket star turned politician Imran Khan and his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. Khan, currently in jail facing legal challenges, is barred from contesting due to a graft conviction. The opposition party has been restricted from holding rallies, and media coverage is heavily censored, forcing the campaign largely online.
Political Persecution and Electoral Challenges
Dozens of PTI candidates nationwide have had their nomination papers rejected, and candidates face harassment and threats. The electoral commission’s rejection of PTI’s electoral symbol, the cricket bat, further complicates their visibility. Imran Khan, despite facing political persecution, remains popular in his constituency of Mianwali, where he initiated key infrastructure projects.
Fading Fervor Ahead of the Election
With two weeks until the vote, the typical excitement and fervor of an election in Pakistan are notably absent. The crackdown, arrests of PTI supporters, and restrictions on campaign activities have created a subdued atmosphere. Despite challenges, Imran Khan maintains popularity in his hometown, symbolizing a complex relationship with the military, which initially supported him but later became a source of tension during his leadership.
