Pakistan Presidential Elections: Zardari and Achakzai Submit Nomination Papers
Former Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari, backed by the Pakistan Peoples Party and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), along with Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PKMAP) chief Mahmood Achakzai, representing the Sunni Ittehad Council, have formally entered the race for the upcoming Pakistani presidential elections scheduled for March 9. The nomination papers were submitted to the Islamabad High Court.
In a dual effort, Zardari submitted two nomination papers, one each in Islamabad and Karachi, highlighting the strategic approach of his candidacy. The Pakistan Senator Farooq H Naek presented the papers, with PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari as the proposer and Senator Farooq H Naek as the seconder.
Dual Submissions and Strong PPP Support
Zardari’s nomination was further bolstered in Karachi, where key figures like Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah and Members of Pakistan National Assembly supported his candidacy. The nomination papers were submitted to the Sindh High Court Chief Justice Aqeel Abbassim, with Murad Ali Shah proposing and Nasir Hussain Shah seconding the nomination.
Achakzai Gains Sunni Ittehad Council Backing
Simultaneously, Mahmood Achakzai’s candidacy gained momentum as Sunni Ittehad Council legislator Latif Khosa submitted his nomination papers to the Islamabad High Court. The support from Sunni Ittehad Council legislators, including Omar Ayub Khan and Ali Muhammad Khan, underlines Achakzai’s diverse backing.
Notably, the presidential election process involves a thorough scrutiny of nomination papers on Monday. The electoral college, comprised of members from the Senate, National Assembly, and provincial assemblies, will play a pivotal role in determining Pakistan’s next President through a confidential voting process.
ANP Pledges Support for Zardari
In a recent development, a delegation led by Awami National Party (ANP) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa President Aimal Wali Khan declared their support for Asif Ali Zardari in the presidential elections after a meeting at Zardari House. This collaboration adds a significant layer of backing to Zardari’s candidacy.
