Pakistan Political Parties Resume Talks on Government Formation
In a bid to finalize the government formation in the central administration, the coordination committee of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) is set to reconvene today. Initially scheduled for Friday, the meeting was postponed as the PML-N’s committee needed further consultation with the party’s senior leadership.
Clarity on Power-Sharing Formula Expected
The meeting aims to provide more clarity on the power-sharing formula between the two major parties. According to Geo News, this collaboration will shed light on how the PPP and PML-N plan to navigate the complexities of forming a government.
The PPP has already pledged its support to the PML-N in government formation and the election of the next prime minister. However, this support is contingent on the PML-N reciprocating in elections for key constitutional offices. Nominating individuals for these crucial positions has proven to be a formidable challenge for PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, given the intense competition within the parties.
Challenges in Nominating Key Officials
Despite assurances of support, the process of nominating individuals for pivotal government positions has become a stumbling block for the PPP. Bhutto-Zardari and party leaders are grappling with the task of identifying suitable candidates amid tough competition.
On Thursday, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari received a briefing from party leaders at Zardari House regarding their contacts with various political parties. The meeting, attended by key figures like Qamar Zaman Kaira and Syed Murad Ali Shah, aimed to strategize the party’s approach in the ongoing negotiations.
PTI’s Stance and Planned Protests
While the PPP and PML-N engage in discussions, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is making its stance clear. PTI founder Imran Khan expressed a willingness to talk with all political parties except the PPP, PML-N, and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM-P).
Moreover, the PTI announced plans for protests in the national capital against alleged “rigging” in the 2024 general elections. Senior Vice President Sher Afzal Marwat stated that the demonstration, led by him, would move from Islamabad’s F9 park to the National Press Club. However, local authorities have denied permission for the PTI to hold these protests in the city.
