Pakistan Elections 2024: HRCP Demand Immediate Restoration of Internet, Mobile Services
The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has issued a strong demand for the immediate restoration of cellular and internet services throughout Pakistan as the populace participates in the general election 2024 today, as per ARY News. The HRCP expressed concern over the ongoing disruption to services, which persists despite the Sindh High Court’s directive to the caretaker government to ensure uninterrupted internet services on polling day.
In an official statement, the HRCP highlighted the lack of transparency regarding the disruption, particularly noting that the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has received no explicit instructions from the government to block internet services. This lack of clarity raises concerns about the duration and extent of the disruption, potentially impinging on voters’ right to information and the timely transmission of election results.
Moreover, the HRCP emphasized the need to identify and hold accountable those responsible for issuing the order to disrupt internet and cellular services.
Earlier today, the Federal Interior Ministry announced the suspension of mobile phone and internet services across Pakistan in a bid to maintain law and order during the general elections 2024. Citing recent incidents of terrorism and the imperative to address potential security threats, the ministry justified the temporary suspension of services as essential for safeguarding public safety.
The suspension of internet and cellular services has also impacted the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) 8300 SMS service, which plays a crucial role in facilitating voter information and engagement.
Polling commenced at 8 am today and is scheduled to continue uninterrupted until 5 pm. With over 128 million eligible voters casting their ballots to elect representatives for the national and provincial assemblies, the election unfolds amid heightened anticipation and significant stakes, marking a pivotal moment in Pakistan’s political landscape.
