Rising Costs Lead to Surge in Chakki Flour Prices in Hyderabad
In a recent development, the city of Hyderabad, the second-largest city in Sindh, is witnessing a notable increase in chakki flour prices. Reports from ARY News on Sunday indicated that the price of chakki flour has surged by Rs10 to Rs12 per kilogram. Consequently, a 10-kg sack of flour has experienced an upward adjustment from Rs1,350 to Rs1,470. Chakki owners released a statement attributing this hike to the escalating cost of wheat, asserting that the price of a 100-kg sack of wheat has risen from Rs8,500 to Rs11,500, marking an increase of Rs3,000.
Impact on Consumer Prices and Wheat Market Dynamics
The repercussions of this surge in chakki flour prices extend beyond the direct impact on consumers. The surge is tied to the cost of wheat in the open market, where chakki owners claim a 100-kg sack of wheat is now being sold for Rs12,000. This situation reflects a broader trend of escalating costs in the wheat market, prompting the chakki owners to pass on these increased expenses to the end consumers.
Government Intervention and Negotiations in Karachi
Earlier this month, Karachi witnessed a stabilization effort in the pricing of flour. Following negotiations between Karachi Commissioner Salim Rajput and the flour mills association, a fixed retail price of Rs127 per kg was established. In addition, a wholesale price of Rs120 per kg was agreed upon for the wholesale market in the city. These measures were taken to address concerns related to the rising costs of essential commodities, including flour. The fine flour, specifically, was priced at Rs130 per kg in the wholesale market and Rs134 in the retail market.
