Omar Abdullah Slams PSA Detention of MLA Mehraj Malik, Calls It “Misuse of Law”
Srinagar, Sept 8 (VoM): Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday strongly criticized the detention of Doda legislator Mehraj Malik under the Public Safety Act (PSA), calling it an unjustified and undemocratic move.
Taking to X, Omar said there was “no justification” for invoking PSA against Malik, arguing that the MLA did not pose any threat to public safety. “Using this discredited law to detain him is simply wrong,” Omar wrote.

He further warned that such actions erode public trust in the political system. “If an unelected administration can use its authority against an elected representative, how can the people of Jammu and Kashmir retain faith in democracy?” he asked.
Mehraj Malik, who represents Doda, was recently booked under the PSA, with authorities alleging that his activities were prejudicial to public order. The move has sparked widespread debate, reviving criticism of the controversial law which has faced repeated calls for repeal due to its alleged misuse.
