Omar Abdullah Criticizes Delay in J&K Elections, Questions Democracy
Omar Abdullah, the former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and Vice President of the National Conference (NC), has openly criticized the current government and the Election Commission of India for the delayed elections in Jammu and Kashmir. In a recent interaction with reporters, he suggested that the delimitation process is being used as an excuse to prolong the election timeline. Abdullah insisted that this process should have started in 2022 and completed by now, enabling timely elections.
Democracy in Question
During his conversation, Omar Abdullah expressed concerns over the state of democracy in Jammu and Kashmir. He argued that the government’s claims of establishing a three-tier democracy in the region are baseless, stating that “not even a single tier remains.” Abdullah also expressed apprehension that the authorities might find further reasons to delay Parliamentary elections in the region, implying that democratic processes seem to stop at Lakhanpur.
Critique of the Election Commission and Internal Party Vigilance
Abdullah didn’t mince words when discussing the Election Commission of India’s role, accusing it of being a part of the problem. He urged the Commission to announce election dates and restore the people’s right to express their voices. Within his party, he emphasized the importance of monitoring elements attempting to weaken it, stressing the need to maintain vigilance against those who disrespect party workers.
Challenging Political Rivals and Awaiting Supreme Court’s Verdict
In his address, Omar Abdullah also spoke about the abrogation of Article 370 and Article 35A, revealing that the matter is pending in the Supreme Court. He expressed hope for a verdict that favors the interests of Kashmiri people. Additionally, he called out Apni Party president Altaf Bukhari, questioning his silence against the BJP and urging him to disclose why he wasn’t detained in 2019, unlike other political leaders. Abdullah also challenged Bukhari to clarify his role in the Tangmarg unrest of 2010 and alluded to historical instances of conspiracies against Chief Ministers in Jammu and Kashmir.
