Omar Abdullah Condemns BJP for CAA Notification Ahead of Elections
National Conference Vice-President and former chief minister J&K Omar Abdullah expressed serious concerns on Tuesday, stating that the BJP’s decision to notify the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) before the Lok Sabha election reveals the party’s ill-intent towards Muslims in the country.

In a press conference held in Srinagar, Omar Abdullah emphasized that although the Citizenship Amendment Act was passed by the Parliament in December 2019, its notification just before the Lok Sabha polls speaks volumes about the BJP’s intentions. According to Abdullah, the BJP has consistently targeted Muslims, and the CAA is another manifestation of the party’s age-old tactic of selectively focusing on this religious community.

He pointed out that after the completion of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, the BJP confidently asserted that they would secure over 400 seats in the country. However, Abdullah suggested that the political landscape has shifted, making the BJP realize the potential backlash they may face in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. To mitigate this, he alleged that the BJP strategically notified the CAA before the elections to garner votes along religious lines. Abdullah went on to describe the CAA as a pre-election gift to the Muslim population from the BJP government.
Addressing a query, Omar Abdullah revealed that a party delegation, led by Provincial President Nasir Aslam Wani, met with the Election Commission at SKICC. During the meeting, they highlighted the concerns of people who have long been deprived of their elected representatives. The National Conference, in its appeal to the Election Commission, urged the simultaneous conduct of Parliamentary and Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. Abdullah expressed anticipation regarding the decision that the Election Commission would make in response to their demands.
