Northern Railways Achieves Milestone with Breakthrough of 3.2km Tunnel in Katra-Reasi Section
In a significant achievement, Northern Railways marked a milestone by successfully breaking through a challenging 3.2-kilometer-long single-tube tunnel at Gunni-Sherwad in the Katra-Reasi section of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link Project, according to top officials on Wednesday.
A high-ranking Northern Railway official announced that a crucial milestone had been reached under the USBRL project with the breakthrough of Tunnel-1, measuring 3209 meters in length. This tunnel, constructed by Konkan Railway Corporation Limited for Northern Railway between Katra-Reasi stations, signifies the completion of all tunnels along the 111-kilometer-long Katra-Banihal railway line. The official highlighted that work on this pivotal tunnel had faced delays for over three years since 2017. Overcoming challenges such as lining work and addressing water seepages in Tunnel-1 proved to be the most demanding aspects of the project. The official emphasized that the diverse Himalayan geology and deep riverine gorges in the section presented formidable obstacles in completing the tunnel work.
Roop Narayan Sunkar, Railway Board Member (Infrastructure), stated, “We had to cover 111 kilometers, with 97 kilometers dedicated to tunnelling. The completion of work on the Chenab Bridge, the world’s highest railway bridge, and the Ajni Bridge, the first cable-stayed rail bridge in the Katra-Banihal section, adds to the list of achievements.”
