NITI Aayog Urges Public Sector Companies to Set Up Charging Stations and Adopt Electric Vehicles: Electric Mobility in India

The NITI Aayog, a policy think tank of the Indian government, recently convened a meeting with Maharatnas, India’s top public sector companies, to encourage the establishment of more charging stations and the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs). The initiative aims to reduce India’s carbon footprint and promote sustainable transportation. Maharatnas, with their substantial fleets, are key players in accelerating the shift toward electric mobility.

    Government’s EV Goals

The Indian government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has set ambitious targets for electric mobility. It aims to have EVs account for 30% of new private vehicle registrations by 2030, totaling 8 crore (80 million) EVs. To support this rapid growth in EV adoption, India will require approximately 39 lakh (3.9 million) public and semi-public charging stations, creating a ratio of one station per 20 vehicles. Currently, the country has a significantly lower ratio of approximately one charging station for every 135 EVs, far below the global average of one station for every 6 to 20 EVs.

    Addressing Fleet Transformation

During the meeting with Maharatnas, several key points were raised concerning the transformation of their vehicle fleets. Maharatnas discussed how the shift to EVs would not be limited to smaller vehicles but would also encompass their machines and equipment. Some Maharatnas are involved in the charging infrastructure and oil marketing sectors. The discussion highlighted the need to explore synergies and cross-pollination of ideas for a successful transition to electric mobility.

Coal India Limited, one of the participants, emphasized the challenges faced by their vehicles, which often operate in demanding environments such as mines. The company expressed a need for electric SUVs to meet these unique operational requirements.

The meeting underscored the positive actions and proactive approach of Maharatnas in adopting EVs and electric mobility across various sectors. NITI Aayog aims to facilitate further collaboration and provide enablers to advance the adoption of electric vehicles in India.
