Nine-Day Remand for PTI Leader Shah Mehmood Qureshi Over May 9 Unrest
The Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) has sanctioned a nine-day physical remand for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Shah Mehmood Qureshi concerning eight cases linked to the violent unrest on May 9, 2023. These incidents occurred following the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan on corruption charges, according to Geo News.
Court Proceedings and Charges:
Judge Khalid Arshad of ATC Lahore issued the remand, mandating that the investigation report on Qureshi be submitted by June 5. The court specified that Qureshi would be interrogated via video link. The investigation report noted that Qureshi had posted videos and messages on social media, which are now undergoing forensic examination. Currently, Qureshi is held in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail facing multiple cases, including a 10-year sentence handed down by a special court under the Official Secrets Act for the cypher case.
Background of May 9 Events:
The unrest on May 9, 2023, erupted nationwide following Imran Khan’s arrest related to a £190 million settlement case. The protests saw extensive violence and attacks on both civil and military installations, including Jinnah House and the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi. The military labeled this day as “Black Day” and initiated legal actions to try the perpetrators under the Army Act.
Political Repercussions:
The events led to the arrest of numerous PTI workers and senior leaders, many of whom later distanced themselves from the party and Khan. PTI Secretary General Omar Ayub Khan has characterized the May 9 incidents as a “conspiracy” aimed at targeting party founder Imran Khan.
The situation remains tense as the PTI leadership faces significant legal and political challenges amidst ongoing investigations and court proceedings.
