NIA Arrests Shabir Ahmad Shah in 1996 Case, Gets Transit Remand
New Delhi/Srinagar, Apr 14 (VoM News): The National Investigation Agency has arrested Kashmiri separatist leader Shabir Ahmad Shah in connection with a 1996 case registered in Jammu and Kashmir.
He was produced before the Patiala House Court, which granted the agency three days of transit remand.
Officials said Shah will be taken to Jammu and Kashmir and presented before a local court for further legal proceedings.
The case relates to an FIR lodged on July 17, 1996, at Shergarhi Police Station. According to investigators, the incident occurred during a funeral procession of slain militants, where sloganeering allegedly escalated into violence. Security agencies claim that armed militants opened fire during the unrest, resulting in injuries to personnel.
The arrest comes shortly after Shah received relief in other cases. He was granted bail by the Supreme Court of India on March 12, 2026, in a separate NIA case, and later secured bail in a money laundering case on March 28, 2026.
The latest development indicates renewed legal action in older cases linked to militancy and unrest in the region.
