The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) in Pakistan has submitted a request to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) to increase the electricity price by PKR 3.53 per unit. According to ARY News, NEPRA will deliberate on this plea on November 29. The proposed hike, intended for October’s monthly fuel adjustment, could result in an additional burden of Rs 40 billion on power consumers.

Utility Allowance for Power Division Officers

In a related development, the Cabinet Committee on Energy (CCoE) approved a summary proposing that officers of the power division from grades 17 to 21 will receive a utility allowance instead of free electricity units. This move marks a shift from the existing practice of providing free power facilities to these officers.

WAPDA Employees Protest Against Policy Change

The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) Employees Union in Lahore protested the proposed discontinuation of free power facilities. They demonstrated in response to rumors that the caretaker government might end this benefit for WAPDA employees. The Union’s President has warned of a strong reaction if the decision to revoke free electricity for employees is confirmed.

Pakistan’s Power Generation and Load Shedding Issues

The country is currently grappling with the repayment of Rs 360 PKR (about 1.25 billion dollars) to Chinese power producers. Concurrently, consumers in Karachi are experiencing heavy load shedding. Hydropower remains the primary source of Pakistan’s power grid, contributing 38%, followed by LNG-based generation at 17.17%, nuclear power at 12.79%, and local coal-based generation at 10.3%. Notably, NEPRA has begun separately reporting local and imported coal-based power generation, highlighting a significant difference in these sources. Additionally, power supply from domestic gas is on a decline, contributing only 7.60% to the grid in August.
