Nepra Increases Electricity Tariff by PKR 3.25 Per Unit Amid Fuel Adjustments
Key Highlights:
- Nepra announces a PKR 3.25 per unit increase in electricity tariff.
- The hike is related to quarterly fuel adjustment for June, July, and August.
- The decision imposes an additional PKR 34 billion burden on consumers.
The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has announced an increase in the electricity tariff by PKR 3.25 per unit. This decision, reported by The Express Tribune, will add an extra burden of PKR 34 billion on power consumers. The hike, detailed in an official notification, is due to quarterly fuel adjustments and will apply to the months of June, July, and August.
Power distribution companies (DISCOs) had earlier requested Nepra to approve an additional charge of PKR 3.488 per unit on the June 2024 bills, based on April 2024 fuel charges adjustment, which would have amounted to PKR 29.2 billion. Nepra’s decision targets an additional collection of PKR 51.86 billion from consumers under the third quarter adjustment of FY24, following a notable decrease in electricity demand across all sectors.
This follows an earlier decision by Nepra on May 8, where electricity prices were increased by PKR 2.83 per unit under the monthly fuel adjustment, as reported by ARY News. This hike, excluding Life Line and K-Electric consumers, was expected to add over PKR 26 billion to consumer bills.
Additionally, K-Electric had sought a significant hike of PKR 18.86 per unit for Karachi consumers, accounting for fuel charges adjustments over seven months from July 2023 to March 2024.
