Nepali Foreign Minister’s Helsinki Visit Abruptly Cancelled
The visit of Nepali Foreign Minister Narayan Prakash Saud to Helsinki, Finland, has been abruptly canceled at the last minute, according to a late-night announcement by the Foreign Ministry. The cancellation was attributed to unavoidable circumstances, and the Foreign Minister would not be able to proceed with the scheduled visit.
Original Purpose of the Visit
Initially, the Foreign Ministry had announced FM Saud’s visit to Helsinki to participate in the Second UN LDC Future Forum scheduled for March 5-6, 2024. The Foreign Minister was set to address the opening session of the forum as the Chair of the Global Coordination Bureau of the Group of Least Developed Countries.
Forum Theme and Purpose
The UN LDC Future Forum, organized by the United Nations Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries, and Small Island Developing States (OHRLLS) and the Government of Finland, had the theme “Innovation for Structural Transformation in LDCs.” The forum aimed to explore ways to leverage innovation, digitalization, and technology for sustainable development in Least Developed Countries.
Speculations and Possible Causes
The sudden cancellation has led to speculation about possible changes in the ruling coalition ahead of the election for National Assembly Chairman. Both the ruling parties, Maoist Center and the Nepali Congress, have been competing for the post, and the cancellation may be linked to political developments within the country.
