Nawaz Sharif Might Depart Pakistan Before Elections: Senior Lawyer Aitzaz Ahsan
According to The Express Tribune, veteran politician and senior lawyer Aitzaz Ahsan suggested the potential for Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif to leave the country once more before the upcoming general elections and monitor the results from abroad.
Ahsan made these comments during an interview with a private news channel, noting that Nawaz Sharif is currently abroad, indicating the possibility of his absence during the critical electoral period.
Additionally, Ahsan mentioned that Maulana Fazlur Rehman, a leader from the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), might consider withdrawing from the race. He remarked that Fazlur Rehman seems to be indicating a step back from active participation, resembling the beats of retreat more than a march towards victory.
Earlier, Ahsan accused the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and the interim government of orchestrating efforts to secure a two-thirds majority for Nawaz Sharif in the upcoming elections.
He criticized the ECP’s involvement in disputes, urging the electoral body to focus on conducting elections instead.
Furthermore, Ahsan criticized the ECP’s actions against the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, particularly concerning the ECP’s decision challenging the Peshawar High Court’s (PHC) ruling reinstating PTI’s election symbol.
He questioned the ECP’s impartiality and highlighted the commission’s reluctance to comply with court directives regarding PTI’s intra-party elections certificate and the restoration of the party’s election symbol.
Ahsan also expressed concerns about contesting judicial decisions, suggesting that such actions could lead to a chain reaction of legal challenges, questioning the legitimacy of challenging higher court rulings.
These statements from Aitzaz Ahsan provide insights into the current political landscape in Pakistan, touching upon various aspects related to the upcoming elections and the role of key political figures and institutions.
