- The Supreme Court has mandated elections by September 30, but no schedule has been set.
- The Supreme Court’s decision last December requires the restoration of statehood and elections.
National Conference MP Ruhullah Mehdi has called for immediate assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, stressing that only one month remains before the Supreme Court’s deadline. During a Lok Sabha debate on the Union budget, Mehdi highlighted the urgency, noting that the Election Commission has yet to announce a schedule for the polls.
The Supreme Court had previously directed the Election Commission to conduct these elections by September 30, but no electoral process has been initiated so far.
Mehdi emphasized that he was not merely requesting elections but was urging adherence to the Supreme Court’s directive for restoring a democratic government. “I have not come here to beg for elections.
The Supreme Court had given directions to this government that a democratic government be formed by September. Just one month is left, and no process for the elections has been started yet,” Mehdi stated.
The Supreme Court had upheld the Center’s decision to abrogate Article 370 last December, which previously granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir. The court also called for the restoration of statehood “at the earliest” and mandated that assembly elections be held by September 30, 2024.
However, the Election Commission announced in March that simultaneous assembly and parliamentary elections in Jammu and Kashmir were impractical due to logistical and security concerns.
The forthcoming assembly elections will be the first since the August 2019 revocation of Article 370 and the reorganization of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories.
