N Chandrababu Naidu Urges PM Modi to Declare Cyclone “Michaung” as National Disaster
Telugu Desam Party (TDP) Chief and former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, N Chandrababu Naidu, penned an open letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, appealing for the declaration of cyclone “Michaung” as a national disaster.
He highlighted the catastrophic impact of the cyclone, revealing preliminary assessments indicating extensive damage.
Naidu emphasized the colossal toll of Cyclone Michaung, estimating damages to crops covering 22 lakh acres, amounting to a staggering Rs 10,000 crore.
He detailed the adverse effects on cattle, livestock, trees, infrastructure, and critical facilities such as roads, drinking water, irrigation, electricity, and communication networks, describing the situation as alarming.
Drawing attention to the plight of farmers, Naidu mentioned the distressing loss of lives, with four farmers tragically ending their lives due to crop failure.
Additionally, fishing communities suffered substantial losses, including boats, nets, and livelihoods.
Cyclone Michaung’s devastating winds, reaching speeds of up to 100 km/h, led to widespread destruction, claiming six lives and severely impacting life and livelihoods across 15 districts in Andhra Pradesh, with spill-over effects in neighbouring Tamil Nadu.
Urging immediate action, Naidu implored PM Modi to declare the cyclone a ‘national disaster.’ He requested the dispatch of a Government of India team to assess the damage comprehensively.
Such a declaration, he emphasized, would facilitate urgent relief efforts and aid in the establishment of resilient long-term infrastructure.
Highlighting the importance of this declaration in fostering confidence among the affected populace, Naidu stressed its significance in demonstrating unity in addressing the challenges posed by this calamity.
