In a significant development, the Mumbai police have arrested two individuals in connection with a case involving the seizure of mephedrone worth a staggering Rs 300 crore. This operation, spanning two months, has exposed a complex web of illegal drug manufacturing and distribution.
The Latest Arrests
One of the arrests includes a man who is alleged to have provided the formula for manufacturing the banned substance and the necessary manpower to set up a factory in Maharashtra’s Nashik district. With these new arrests, the total number of individuals apprehended in connection with this case has reached 18.
Details of the Arrested Individuals
A team from Saki Naka police arrested Harishchandra Pant from his native Dehradun in Uttarakhand. Pant had previously resided in Vasai, Palghar district. Additionally, 30-year-old Amir Atique Khan from Kurla, Mumbai, was arrested. Khan was reportedly involved in purchasing substantial quantities of mephedrone for sale in Mumbai.
Key Role of Harishchandra Pant
Harishchandra Pant is believed to have played a pivotal role in this illicit operation. He allegedly provided the formula for manufacturing mephedrone in large quantities and assisted Lalit Patil and his brother Bhushan Patil in setting up the illegal drug manufacturing factory. Pant, along with the other accused, was presented in court, where he was remanded to police custody until October 30.
Seizure and Operation Details
Over the course of two months, the police successfully seized mephedrone worth Rs 300 crore. This operation also resulted in the arrests of multiple individuals from various cities and the dismantling of a drug manufacturing unit located in the Shindegaon MIDC industrial area in Nashik district on October 5. The accused individuals had rented the location under the guise of establishing an insecticide factory, keeping the true nature of their operation concealed.
Total Seizures and Ongoing Investigations
To date, the police have confiscated 163.8 kilograms of mephedrone valued at Rs 325 crore. This case has revealed links to other drug-related incidents, including the Chakan MIDC Pune drugs case. The investigation is ongoing as the authorities work to uncover the full extent of this illegal drug manufacturing and distribution network.
