Moscow Urgently Warns Against Protests in the Aftermath of Alexei Navalny’s Death: Cautionary Advisory Issued
Social Media Memorials Emerge for Navalny Amidst Moscow’s Warning
Moscow issued a stern warning on Friday against potential street protests following the news of the death of prominent Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny. Russian authorities declared that Navalny had passed away in the Arctic prison colony where he was serving a lengthy sentence. Social media platforms were flooded with images of people laying flowers at memorials dedicated to victims of political repression, honoring Navalny’s legacy.
The prosecutor’s office in Moscow acknowledged the online calls for a mass rally in the city center and emphasized the need to caution against any actions that could violate the law. Protests in Russia face strict regulations under anti-dissent laws, and authorities have consistently cracked down on rallies supporting Navalny.
Solovetsky Stone Witnesses Floral Tributes and Detentions
In Moscow, dozens gathered at the Solovetsky Stone, a monument commemorating victims of Soviet-era repression, situated opposite the headquarters of Russia’s FSB security services. This building was formerly the home of the feared Soviet secret police. Individuals were seen laying red and white roses as a tribute to Navalny. However, at least one person was detained for displaying a placard with the word “murderers,” as seen in a video posted by the independent Sota Telegram channel.
Memorial at Kremlin Bridge and Police Actions in Kazan
A small group also assembled to lay flowers at a bridge near the Kremlin, the site where Putin critic Boris Nemtsov was killed in 2015. The poignant gesture paid homage to both Navalny and Nemtsov, reflecting the enduring spirit of dissent. Additionally, police were recorded dispersing individuals who had gathered in the snow at a memorial in the central city of Kazan, underscoring the authorities’ intolerance towards public gatherings expressing discontent.
Beyond Moscow: Demonstrations in Tbilisi, Yerevan, and Belgrade
Not limited to Moscow, larger demonstrations unfolded in Tbilisi, Yerevan, and Belgrade. These cities house significant populations of Russians who fled the country following Moscow’s military offensive on Ukraine. The global response to Navalny’s death resonated in various corners, reflecting the international impact of events in Russia.
