Monday, July 22 Sets New Record for Hottest Day
Key Highlights:
- Global average surface air temperature reached 17.15°C on July 22.
- Record surpassed previous day’s high of 17.09°C.
- Climate change, driven by fossil fuel burning, is the primary cause.
Monday, July 22 has set a new record for the hottest day on Earth, according to preliminary data from the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service. The global average surface air temperature reached 17.15 degrees Celsius, surpassing the previous day’s record of 17.09 degrees Celsius.
The record-breaking heat continues a trend observed earlier in July 2023, when the hottest day record was set for four consecutive days. Prior to that, the hottest day on record was in August 2016.
“This past Monday might have set a new global record for warmest absolute global average temperature ever — by that I mean going back tens of thousands of years,” said climate scientist Karsten Haustein at Leipzig University in Germany.
In recent days, cities across Japan, Indonesia, and China have reported record-breaking heat, while Gulf countries have experienced heat indexes exceeding 60 degrees Celsius. Temperatures in parts of Europe have also surged past 45 degrees Celsius.
Scientists attribute this unprecedented heat to climate change driven by the burning of fossil fuels. However, unlike last year when climate change combined with the El Nino climate pattern, this July’s record has been set without the influence of El Nino. Haustein remarked that it was “remarkable” to breach the record now that the world is in a neutral climate state.
