To put this number into perspective, one estimate says that if you were to watch 14 billion videos on YouTube without breaks – assuming an average video length of five minutes– it would take approximately 133,333 years to complete the task of watching 70,000,000,000 minutes of YouTube videos.
And that’s just the current count – the platform continues to grow at an unprecedented rate, with over 500 hours of new content being added every minute.
Watchtime: A Metric of Engagement
YouTube’s watchtime, a metric that measures the collective time spent watching videos, is equally staggering.
Users spend an average of 48 minutes per day on YouTube. Mobile devices account for 88 percent of all traffic to YouTube.
YouTube has 2.49 billion monthly active users worldwide.
Using these figures, a reasonable estimate for the number of billion hours of YouTube content watched on mobile devices in 2024 would be around 640 billion hours. That’s close to 1.8 billion hours per day.
As far as people watching YouTube content on their TV screens, the global watchtime exceeds a whopping 1 billion hours on TV screens per day.
YouTube Shorts – the platform’s short-form video feature – garners a staggering 50 billion daily views.
This insatiable appetite for video content has made YouTube a goldmine for creators and advertisers alike.
In the first quarter of this year, the platform generated a reported advertising revenue of whopping $8.1 billion, up over 20 percent from $6.7 billion in the same quarter of last year.
In 2023, YouTube earned a total of $31.5 billion worth of revenues, a 1.3-percent increase compared with those of 2022.

Interestingly but perhaps not surprisingly, YouTube is most popular with those aged 25-34, with 21.3% of viewers worldwide falling into that demographic.
