Meta, formerly Facebook, reported a robust revenue of $40.1 billion in the last quarter of 2023, contributing to a total annual revenue of $134.9 billion. Despite a 16 percent yearly increase, Meta’s Reality Labs unit has been consistently incurring losses since 2021.

Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s CEO, acknowledged the positive revenue trend while emphasizing the company’s progress in advancing AI and the metaverse. Despite Reality Labs’ losses, Zuckerberg praised the unit’s contributions to emerging technologies.

Established in 2021, Reality Labs focuses on metaverse and AR research and development. Despite releasing popular hardware products like the Quest VR headset lineup, the unit faced losses, with a reported $46.5 billion loss in Q4 2023, despite generating $11 billion in revenue.

Zuckerberg remains optimistic about the metaverse’s potential, as indicated by Meta’s commissioned study projecting a significant contribution to the US GDP by 2035. Despite financial setbacks, Meta continues to invest in the metaverse’s future.
