MeT Predicts Rain and Snowfall in Higher Areas of J-k in the Next 24 Hours
A Western disturbance is poised to impact the region, potentially bringing precipitation in the form of rain or snow to the higher altitudes of Jammu and Kashmir within the next 24 hours, according to officials.
The Meteorological Centre in Srinagar has forecasted partly to fairly cloudy conditions across most areas today. There is a chance of light rain or snow in isolated higher elevations during tonight and tomorrow morning, with an expected improvement thereafter. The weather is projected to remain generally dry from December 24 to 26, transitioning to generally cloudy conditions with the possibility of light snow in isolated higher reaches on December 27.
The Meteorological office anticipates dry weather from December 28 until the end of the month, with no significant weather activity expected during this period. Independent weather observer, Kashmir Weather, indicates the likelihood of precipitation in the form of rain or snow in certain areas during the late-night hours of Friday or the early morning hours of Saturday. Snowfall may also occur in some plains amid chilly weather, particularly in the Shopian-Kulgam belt, where temperatures are expected to rise by 3-5°C but remain conducive to snowfall.
According to Kashmir Weather, there is a possibility of snowfall in areas such as Shopian, Kulgam, Anantnag, Pulwama, Srinagar, Ganderbal, Budgam, Baramulla, Bandipora, and Kupwara. Additionally, Gulmarg and Sonmarg may experience a spell of snowfall.
In response to the Western disturbance, minimum temperatures have improved at most stations. Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, recorded temperatures just above freezing, showing an improvement from the previous day. The freezing cold conditions in the Kashmir valley have resulted in frozen water taps and bodies of water, impacting parts of the iconic Dal Lake and other areas.
Despite the cold weather, there is a glimmer of warmth as maximum temperatures in Srinagar were 1.8°C above normal, with above-normal day temperatures recorded in other parts of the Kashmir valley. Qazigund on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway settled at -3.0°C, while Kokernag recorded a low of 2.4°C. Pahalgam’s mercury improved to -4.8°C, and Gulmarg recorded a low of -1.4°C, all with variations from the previous day’s temperatures.
The minimum temperature in Kupwara, a frontier north Kashmir district, had a low of -3.4°C, slightly below normal. The overall weather scenario indicates a period of dry and settled conditions with the possibility of isolated snowfall in specific regions.
