Massive Heroin Seized in Assam: 4.765kg Confiscated Near State Border

In a significant drug interception, the Assam Police announced on Friday that they confiscated 4.765kg of heroin from the Cachar district, near the Assam-Mizoram state border. One individual was apprehended in connection with the illicit substance. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed, “Based on credible intelligence, Cachar Police conducted an operation in the wee hours today and apprehended a suspect in Dholai.”

Operation Details and Seizure

According to Sarma, the police seized 30 soap boxes and four leather bags containing the suspected heroin from a vehicle arriving from a neighboring state. The seized narcotics have an estimated market value of ₹24 crore in illegal markets. The consignment, as per the police investigation, originated from Mizoram’s Aizawl and was en route to West Bengal.

Trafficking Route and Peddlers’ Strategy

“The narcotics were transported from the neighboring state in small amounts, and the peddlers kept it at a house in Cachar,” revealed Superintendent of Police (SP) Numal Mahatta. The SP added, “We received the information last night and launched an operation at around 3 am.”

Arrest and Ongoing Investigations

The arrested individual, identified as Md Abdul Hussain Laskar (35), hails from Islamabad village in Dholai, according to the police. Laskar has been detained under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985. In the preliminary interrogation, it has been revealed that other locals were also involved in transporting the seized consignment. SP Mahatta emphasized that the Assam Police have previously arrested individuals from neighboring states and locals for drug-related activities near state borders.

SP Mahatta highlighted the strict vigilance maintained by Assam Police on such activities. He stated, “We keep a strict vigil on each of these activities. The smugglers often make attempts, and they keep changing their modus operandi. We study their methods and manage to catch them.” This recent operation reinforces the state’s commitment to combating drug trafficking and ensuring the safety of its borders.
