Mass Unconsciousness at Assam School Prompts Urgent Investigation and Program Cancellation
More than 40 students at Ramkrishnanagar Vidyapith in Assam’s Karimganj district fell unconscious during a Gunotsav program, causing panic among students and parents. The incident occurred on Saturday, as reported by the district administration. Local MLA Bijoy Malakar mentioned that around 50 students had previously fainted on Friday, leading to their immediate transfer to the local primary center. Some were hospitalized, while others recovered on their own. The cause behind these incidents remains uncertain, according to Malakar.
The episode unfolded at the Ramkrishnanagar Vidyapith in the Ramkrishna Nagar area and created a sense of alarm among students and parents. School teachers explained that on Friday morning, several students fainted and exhibited strange behavior, prompting their hospitalization. Although they were discharged in the evening, a more significant number of students collapsed during Saturday’s morning prayers, intensifying the concern among the remaining students.
Mostly affecting girl students from classes 5 to 9, the incident drew the attention of Dipankar Das, an external evaluator for the Gunotsav Programme. He witnessed two female students screaming and rolling on the ground during the morning assembly. Despite attempts by teachers to calm them and relocate them to the sick room, more students began displaying similar behavior, leading to a sequence of fainting episodes.
In response to the situation, Additional District Commissioner Dhrubajyoti Pathak and a team of officers visited Ramkrishnanagar Civil Hospital to assess the situation. Pathak dismissed the notion of mass hysteria, suggesting that the occurrences might be due to mental pressure. Doctors diagnosed it as a psychological issue, and after initial treatment, most students were discharged from the hospital. A team of psychiatrists has been called in to further investigate the matter.
Concerned guardians and locals gathered at the school campus on Saturday, demanding the withdrawal of the Gunotsav program. In response to the public outcry, District Commissioner Mridul Yadav canceled the program and closed the school for three days to conduct a thorough investigation.
