Market Pause: Stocks Take a Breather Ahead of Bank of England Decision
Key Highlights:
- European stocks ease as Bank of England’s interest rate decision looms; Sabadell-BBVA deal turns hostile.
- Chinese stocks continue outperformance on positive trade data and property market developments.
- Japanese yen slides to 155.85 per dollar amid intervention talks; Japan’s real wages decline 2.5% in March.
World stocks took a pause on Thursday, following a strong run, with European stocks dipping slightly ahead of the Bank of England’s rate decision. After two record highs, the pan-European STOXX 600 retreated 0.1%, particularly notable with Sabadell-BBVA’s hostile deal development in Spain. The Bank of England is expected to maintain UK rates at 5.25%, with market focus on guidance from Chief Andrew Bailey.
Chinese stocks continued their upswing, bolstered by upbeat trade data showing an 8.4% jump in imports and a return to export growth. The news lifted Chinese shares, with blue-chip stocks gaining nearly 1%, and Hangzhou’s decision to lift home purchase restrictions further boosted sentiment, particularly in the property sector.
In other markets, Japan’s Nikkei and Australia’s share market dipped, while Nasdaq and S&P 500 futures eased 0.2%, partly due to Uber’s downbeat forecast. The Japanese yen continued its decline, reaching 155.85 per dollar, prompting intervention concerns, despite Japan’s real wages declining by 2.5% in March.
Treasuries remained stable ahead of the U.S. inflation report, with yields little changed. Oil prices saw a slight uptick, recovering from two-month lows, while gold prices rose by 0.3% to $2,316.23 per ounce.
