Major Drug Bust in Udhampur: 344 kg of Poppy Plants Seized
JAMMU, 19 JULY, 2024 : In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, police in Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur district arrested an alleged drug peddler and seized a large quantity of poppy plants.
Acting on a tip-off, a police team intercepted an oil tanker on the highway at Chenani on Friday, officials reported. The operation led to the discovery of 344 kilograms and 100 grams of poppy plants, hidden inside the vehicle.
Tip-Off and Interception
The police received credible information about the transportation of illegal substances. Acting swiftly, they set up a checkpoint on the highway at Chenani.
During the inspection, they stopped an oil tanker for routine checking. What seemed like a regular vehicle inspection turned into a major drug bust when the officers discovered 23 bags filled with poppy plants concealed inside the tanker.
Arrest and Seizure
The driver of the tanker, identified as Harpreet Singh, a native of Punjab, was immediately arrested. The police seized both the vehicle and the illegal cargo.
Harpreet Singh is currently in custody, and preliminary investigations suggest that he might be part of a larger drug trafficking network.
The exact route and destination of the contraband are still under investigation.
Ongoing Investigation
A case has been registered at the Chenani police station, and further investigations are underway. Authorities are now focusing on uncovering the supply chain and identifying other individuals involved in this illegal operation.
The seizure of such a large quantity of poppy plants is seen as a significant victory in the fight against drug trafficking in the region.
Police officials have reiterated their commitment to curbing the drug menace and have urged the public to report any suspicious activities.
This arrest highlights the relentless efforts of the Jammu and Kashmir police in their ongoing battle against drug trafficking, aiming to ensure a safer and drug-free society.
