Madhya Pradesh CM Seeks ₹2000 Crore Loan Amid Financial Strain
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, in office for less than two weeks, has approached the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) seeking a substantial ₹2,000 crore loan to address the state’s financial needs. This move sheds light on the state government’s precarious fiscal condition, burdened by a massive debt of nearly 4 lakh crore inherited from the former Chief Minister, Shivraj Singh Chouhan.
Financial Challenges and Promises
The BJP government, propelled by significant electoral promises made during the Assembly polls, faces severe financial constraints. The previous government, under Chouhan’s leadership, incurred substantial debts to sustain welfare schemes such as Ladli Behna. Despite the financial strain, Yadav has assured the Assembly that ongoing welfare schemes, including Ladli Laxmi Yojana, will persist without interruption.
Opposition Criticism and Retort
The opposition Congress, however, remains skeptical, accusing the BJP of plunging Madhya Pradesh into financial distress. Highlighting the mounting debt per citizen, the Congress spokesperson Abbas Hafeez criticized the BJP’s financial policies. In response, Deputy Chief Minister Jagdish Devda defended the loan necessity, advocating borrowing for developmental initiatives such as road construction and irrigation projects. He accused the previous Congress administrations of misusing funds obtained through loans, alleging their diversion instead of fostering development.
The ongoing financial strain in Madhya Pradesh reflects the complex challenge faced by the new government in balancing economic stability while fulfilling electoral commitments.
