Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva Wins Fourth Term as Brazil President, Now Faces Political Division, Economic Pressures
BRASILIA, October 26, 2026 (VoM News): Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has secured an unprecedented fourth presidential term, defeating right-wing challenger Flavio Bolsonaro in a closely contested runoff election, according to reported results.
Lula received around 51.8 per cent of the vote against Bolsonaro’s 48.2 per cent, highlighting the deep political divisions that have shaped Brazil over the past decade. The result also demonstrates the continued strength of the political movement associated with former president Jair Bolsonaro.
Lula, 80, now faces major challenges, including a divided Congress, rising public debt, fiscal pressures and growing public concern over crime and violence. His administration will need support from centrist and centre-right lawmakers to advance its legislative agenda.
Economic management is expected to be a key test. Brazil’s public debt has exceeded 80 per cent of gross domestic product, while high interest rates and household debt continue to weigh on the economy. Lula has pledged to protect welfare programmes while addressing concerns over government spending.
Security is another major issue, with pressure mounting on the government to tackle organised criminal groups and armed militias operating in several cities.
Relations with US President Donald Trump will also remain important. Lula has campaigned on protecting Brazil’s sovereignty amid tensions over US tariffs and Washington’s growing involvement in Latin America.
Despite the victory, political analysts say Lula will face a difficult task in building consensus and easing polarisation as he begins his new term.
