Residents Seek Geological Survey Amid Subsidence Concerns: Landslides and Cracks Threaten Homes in Himachal Pradesh’s Lindur Village
Lindur village in Himachal Pradesh’s Lahaul and Spiti district faces an alarming situation, with nine out of 16 houses developing cracks due to land sinking. The villagers, numbering around 70, are now forced to sleep in the open, fearing the collapse of their homes. Not only are their houses at risk, but their agricultural land has also suffered damage from fissures that have emerged.
Request for Geological Survey
The cracks began appearing in the periphery of the village in June/July, and they have since widened and spread, posing a significant threat to the houses. Out of the 16 houses in the village, nine are now damaged, with four declared unsafe. Sarita, Pradhan of Goharama Gram Panchayat, suggested that water seepage from the nearby Jahmala nullah, which experiences annual flooding, might be responsible for the cracks. However, she emphasized the need for a geological survey by the Geological Department to ascertain the exact cause.
Authorities’ Response and Safety Measures
Government officials have visited the affected houses, and residents with damaged homes have been offered the option to move to safer locations. The situation remains under control, but the villagers understandably feel nervous. The district administration has instructed the Tehsildar to provide immediate relief to the affected families.
The administration has also reached out to the Indian Institute of Technology, Mandi, to conduct a study and recommend potential solutions. A similar incident occurred earlier this year in Joshimath, Uttarakhand, when extensive cracks jeopardized the safety of houses, fields, and roads, prompting the relocation of residents to safer areas.
