Ladakh Leads with 477 Snow Leopards: Wildlife Institute of India Urges Dedicated Conservation Efforts
The Wildlife Institute of India’s recent extensive survey has identified Ladakh Union Territory as a significant contributor to the snow leopard population, recording the highest count of 477 leopards.
At the inaugural Snow Leopard Population Assessment in India, Bhupender Yadav, the Union Minister of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, presented the findings during the National Board for Wildlife meeting held in New Delhi on Tuesday.
Spanning from 2019 to 2023, this thorough survey employed camera traps and trail surveys strategically placed across the trans-Himalayan region.
Ladakh, in conjunction with Jammu and Kashmir, played a crucial role in this nationwide initiative, encompassing more than 70% of the potential snow leopard habitat.
According to the Snow Leopard Population Assessment, a total of 718 leopards were found in India. Ladakh stood out with 477, underscoring its pivotal role in safeguarding these vulnerable species. The report further recommends the establishment of a dedicated snow leopard cell at the Wildlife Institute of India, emphasizing the importance of long-term population monitoring and consistent field surveys to formulate effective conservation strategies.
