Winter Wonderland Transformation
Amidst a fresh layer of heavy snowfall, the Kashmir leg of the fourth edition of Khelo India Winter Games is set to commence in the scenic ski resort of Gulmarg on Wednesday. However, due to a dry winter and a parched Gulmarg, the initial part of the games, featuring Ice Hockey and Ice Skating, unfolded in Leh from February 2. The stage is now set for a spectacular display of winter sports in the enchanting Gulmarg from February 21 to 25.
Gulmarg’s Snowy Splendor
After experiencing two spells of snowfall, Gulmarg, situated around 50 km from Srinagar in the western Himalayas, has undergone a transformation into a vast expanse of white beauty. The snow-clad peaks and pine forests have created a mesmerizing landscape, attracting tourists and sports enthusiasts alike. The region offers adventure for every level of visitor, from novices to seasoned ski experts.
Preparations and Potential
In anticipation of the upcoming events, Sarmad Hafeez, secretary-youth services and sports, Jammu and Kashmir, chaired a review meeting. He emphasized the need to clear and maintain roads for smooth traffic and ensure proper accommodation and facilities for athletes and delegates. Hafeez sees Gulmarg’s potential to become a world-class winter sports destination and stressed the importance of making the Khelo India Winter Games a grand success, showcasing the beauty of the venue.
Diverse Snow Sports on Display
Nuzhat Gull, secretary-sports council, shared that the competition will feature four snow sports – Ski Mountaineering, Alpine Skiing, Snowboarding, and Nordic Skiing. She assured that the preparations are complete, and Gulmarg is ready to welcome athletes and participants. The Khelo India Winter Games, a part of the central government’s flagship Khelo India scheme, aims to promote mass participation and excellence in sports. Officials expect the games to boost tourism, the economy, and inspire youth to engage in sports.
Sonamarg’s National Snowshoe Championship
Simultaneously, Sonamarg in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district is hosting its first national-level winter sports event, the 8th National Snowshoe Championship. Organized by the J&K SnowShoe Federation, in collaboration with the Sonamarg Development Authority and the Hoteliers Association of Sonamarg, the event marks a significant milestone for the mountain resort. Over 200 athletes from 13 states are participating in the three-day championship, contributing to the region’s sporting development and tourism prospects.
