H. Rajesh Prasad, the Principal Secretary of the Power Development Department, recently addressed concerns regarding the extended dry spell in the Kashmir Valley, seeking to allay fears of an immediate impact on power supply. In an exclusive interview with Rising Kashmir, Prasad attributed the situation to the absence of heavy snowfall, leading to a decline in water levels crucial for power generation. While acknowledging the potential future implications on vital water resources, including reservoirs and canals, Prasad stressed the immediate stability of power supply.

Despite the lack of immediate effects, Prasad highlighted the connection between the deficient snowfall, diminishing water levels, and the potential repercussions in the future. In response to queries about government interventions, he indicated that decisions would be made once the ongoing snowfall season concludes. To address uncertainties, Prasad assured the public that preemptive measures would be implemented to prevent consumer inconvenience in case of prolonged dry conditions. Senior government officials expressed optimism, underscoring the significance of sustained snowfall and rain to replenish water reservoirs for future power supplies.

Currently, the Power Development Department reports no issues, maintaining a consistent schedule of 1800 megawatts. Prasad addressed concerns about potential additional power curtailment, assuring the public that any such measures would be temporary and advised against panic.

The Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) announced a temporary extension of power curtailment by 2 to 2.5 hours due to reduced power generation during the prolonged spell in the Valley. However, KPDCL assured a return to previous curtailment levels once sufficient power is restored. On its microblogging site, X (formerly Twitter), KPDCL stated, “This is for the information of the general public that due to a drastic reduction in power generation resulting in reduced availability of power, KPDCL shall be forced to temporarily increase the curtailment by 2 to 2.5 hours across Kashmir Valley during peak hours.”
